I have been a member of Key Club for almost four years now. I joined my freshman year, just because my sister was a member of Key Club throughout her high school years, and all the stories she would tell me about how much fun she had with key club inspired me to join Key Club as well. Throughout the years Key Club has not only impacted me as a member of the club within school, but also as a person outside of school. It makes you realize how important it is to volunteer your time within your community. It has impacted me as a person by teaching me that there is others out there in need of your help. Even though you don’t get paid money for giving up 6 hours of your saturday, you do get paid many charitable experiences. It might sound cliche but it’s true. Every Key Club event you attended, you gain something out of it, it varies from a life lesson, to learning a new skill, to realizing real world problems. Key Club has taught me that it’s okay to get my hands all dirty, because at the end of the day, you know that you helped your community in one way or another. Like attending the Houston Food Bank, once we had to go into a fridge like room and sort out produce. We were told to open up each package and remove the ones that were rotten and toss it into a “Compost” pile. After a while, our hands were dirty, smelly and numb because of the cold temperature. And the “compost” pile created an unbearable odor. But we all pushed through until the end of the 4 hours, because we knew we were essentially feeding the less fortunate from the city of Houston. And just thinking about that it kept me motivated to push through the four hours and complete the assigned task. Events like those are the ones that impacted me the most because I would never do anything like that if it was not for Key Club. It has offered me so many different opportunities that I would never do myself. Thanks to Key Club I have changed as a person, because Key Club has showed me the reality, the good and the bad, of my community. And that it’s worth it to volunteer your time every week or so. |
